    Plus, I don't know what would stop them from getting in boats and running up the coast. It just sounds like a major waist of money.

    Shingle roofing is the easiest form, requires little skill compared to slate, ceramic tile, or shake. Additionally, you really have to watch your lapping of the shake so that you wind up with a very water-tight roof.
